Have you believed for eternal life

By Pastor Roger Redmond
And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. Have you believed for eternal life? I did not say Have you worked, have you prayed for it, have you been baptized for it, have you joined the church for it.

Act 16:30  And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?

Act 16:31  And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

There comes a time in our life when we must own our own condition before the LORD.  There we stand before the All-Seeing Eye of God and our sin, our condition, ever before us and Him.  It is the LORD who seeks us and brings us to see our need, Luke 19:10 For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost. Luk_15:2  And the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying, This man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them.  Conviction comes from the Holy Spirit.  Pro_20:27  The spirit of man is the candle of the LORD, searching all the inward parts of the belly.  It is The Spirit of The LORD touching our spirit.  He wants a man to know truth, Psa_51:6  "Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: …."

The Question Asked:   "What must I do to be saved?"  If one is saved this is the place every one must come: To realize they must be saved.  Psa_18:28  For thou wilt light my candle: the LORD my God will enlighten my darkness.

Joh_6:63  It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life .John 6:63

  • The question implies helpless and sin, Romans 3:10. Our thinking is wrong.
  • A man may be right in his own eyes, Pro_16:2  All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; but the LORD weigheth the spirits.
  • The LORD measures out the heart, Pro_21:2  Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the LORD pondereth the hearts.
  • We are described in the Word of God, Romans 3:11-19. E.G. (11-12) here is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.  They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one. (19) Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.  We sin in our hearts, our mind our body.
  • The Truth is a man must believe to have eternal life.
  • Your baptism does not give you Eternal life,
  • Church membership does not mean you have believed.
  • The sin question must be dealt with,  What about the sins of the past, now and future,
  • Turning over a new leaf and making promises to God does not give you eternal life.
  • What if you never sinned again? There is still the sins of the past and our wicked heart, Isa 1:5  Why should ye be stricken any more? ye will revolt more and more: the whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint. Isa 1:6  From the sole of the foot even unto the head there is no soundness in it; but wounds, and bruises, and putrifying sores: they have not been closed, neither bound up, neither mollified with ointment.
  • It is the LORD who settled the sin question, Go to Psalm 51: 1-10  ( 1,) The mercy of God, The grace of God, "blot out my transgressions"; (v2 )"Wash me…cleanse me from my sin" (4) "Against thee and thee only have I sinned";  (6) "Make me to know wisdom"; (7 )"purge me" (Hebrews 1:3) "And I shall be clean", Whiter than snow" Isaiah 1:18  Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.  1 Cor. 15:1-3.

  • The question implies blindness and darkness.  Your enemies: the world, the flesh, and the devil, hinder you, blind you and lure you.  If man knew the answer there would have been no question.  The other day as I stood talking I realized how lost you are without Christ and the only way to be saved is to believe for eternal.  My question have you believe in Christ for eternal life.   It is the Spirit that gives Life, Joh_6:63  It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.
  • It is the LORD that gives understanding  Psa_18:28  For thou wilt light my candle: the LORD my God will enlighten my darkness. Eph 1:18  The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, Eph 1:19  And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power, Eph 1:20  Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places,

The answer is given, And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.  Have you believed for eternal life? I did not say Have you worked, have you prayed for it, have you been baptized for it, have you joined the church for it.  Go to Acts 26:14-32, e.g. vs 26,27,28 For the king knoweth of these things, before whom also I speak freely: for I am persuaded that none of these things are hidden from him; for this thing was not done in a corner. King Agrippa, believest thou the prophets? I know that thou believest. Then Agrippa said unto Paul, Almost thou persuadest me to be a Christian.

He believed the words of the prophets - but he did not believe for himself.  Remember Pilate: What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ?  He knew! He was warned! He asked what to do with Jesus! But he never believed in Christ for Himself!  To be almost is to be altogether lost.
